If you are planning to leave your job, attend a Yoga Teacher Training Course and start dedicating your new life teaching Yoga and learning Yoga then you might just take a break and read the following.

Yes you can.

No it won’t be easy. It will take time and a lot of dedication.

Also define « living », how much money do you need to live? If you are expecting to earn 4,000€ per month after attending your first and only Yoga Teacher Training Course then you might be slightly wrong. Unless you already have an address book full of potential requests.

How much a Yoga Teacher is making per month?

First of all you won’t be employe. In most of the case you will need to become an freelancer, self-employed.

If you are working in Yoga Studio the rate per students or per classes may varied.

It varies between 35€/40€ per hour. Then after 8 or 10 students in your class you might earn something like 5€ more per « head ».

For private class in a studio you can earn up to 50€.

For a private class at home you can ask, depends on your location between 60€ to 100€. Teachers with better experience and fame can bill up to 120€/hour for a private at home (maybe more).

Check with your student but you might need to bring yoga mat and props to their home. Also avoid to teach a private yoga class at the other side of your town, try to be center and avoid the 1 hour journey, it is not worth it specially if you are sharing your time between different yoga studios and private yoga classes….

If you decide to organise some workshops wether you rent a yoga space (17€ / 30€ per hour) and bill directly your students or you decide to do a share with a Yoga Studio.

If you are renting the place then you will have to bring the students to your workshop. If you are on share basis such as 50/50 then the studio will also advertise your workshops and most likely they will bring students to your workshops.

Organising Yoga Retreats

Looks fun on the paper but need a huge organisation.

  1. You need to find a yoga shala
  2. You need to find accommodation
  3. You will have to pay 30% of the full rental BEFORE even received your first registration to your Retreat – that is the scary part…
  4. If you cancel your Retreat because you do not have any registrations you might loose your money – that is the financial risk….
  5. You will need to advertise and to pay for advertisement, therefore before earning any money you will have to invest in communication – that is mandatory!
  6. You will need a lot of flexibility with the food, people are now vegan, gluten free, dairy free, raw food, liquid diet etc.
  7. If this is your first Yoga Retreat it has to be attractive, the place has to be magic, the room beautiful and you should be able to propose single and double accommodation.
  8. Do not charge too much the Yoga Retreat. If you are paying per person 50€/day for the accommodation and 20€/day for the food that means that one student is costing you 70€/day so for a 10 days retreat you will have to pay 700€ to the Yoga Retreat Center for ONE STUDENT. If you want to make reasonable money you might need to charge double to your student, then 1.400€ / for 10 days Yoga Retreat all food and accommodation included. You can also decided to lower the rate in order to have more people and to charge only 1.100€ / for 10 days Yoga Retreat with all food and accommodation. Still your are making 400€/students, not bad.
  9. You should know the location where you are bringing your students! Be sure that there is an hospital nearby in case of any emergency.
  10. If you are organising a Retreat in the middle of nowhere be sure to have a program that suit everyone, or your students might be bored at the end of the day….

Organising Yoga Teacher Training Course

  1. You should know your subject.
  2. What do you want to teach to your students?
  3. Do you have something that needs to be share?
  4. Be ready to get only one or two students!
  5. Do NOT CANCEL YOUR Yoga Teacher Training course because you do not have at least 10 students!!! Do not even think about cancellation!
  6. Avoid to charge a YTTC 3.000€!!! Why do you want to charge such a huge amount??? Why? Why? Why?
  7. If your course is too expensive then you might loose the people who really want to practice with you with dedication and do not have that much of money to invest. However you might have only students who are not really into Yoga but who have money to spend….. Do not teach only to one « elite »….
  8. Prepare a manual, not only with pictures but with actual text and explanation.
  9. Do not copy manual from your former Yoga Teacher Training Course….. teach what you know and what you want to explain!
  10. Be sure you have enough experience to share.

Also if you want to be a Good Yoga Teacher never ever stop practicing!

You should be a Dedicated Yoga Practitioner (as per me a « DYP »), once again it has a cost because no one is teaching for free. You should be ready to receive and to spend money for your own practice, you should not become « dry », keep yourself inspired by others teachers if you want to inspire others practitioners.

Don’t lie, be honest.

Namaste!
